Boss sets sights high for Fifers

NEW East Fife boss Billy Brown says he sees no reason why the Methil club shouldn’t grow into steady First Division regulars.

The manager took charge for the first time at the weekend and watched on as the Fifers went down 1-0 to Alloa.

And, although the short term objective is to guide the club away from any potential relegation trouble, Brown says he believes, ultimately, they should be aiming higher.

Speaking to the Mail on Monday, the manager said: “East Fife have a good reputation and to me have always seemed to be a well-run club.

“As far as I can see it’s probably one of the bigger part-time clubs in the country.

“I know Fife well; I played with Raith Rovers, so was keen to become manager here.”

Before Saturday’s game, Brown addressed the Bayview crowd, telling the Fife support he wanted to take East Fife back to a league position he reckoned the club merited.

The manager told the Mail just where exactly he thinks that is.

“I would think a club like East Fife could be comfortable in the First Division,” he said.

“I don’t think there’s any reason why not.

“Obviously, to do that, we’re going to have to start climbing the table a bit first.”

This weekend, Brown takes the Fifers to Cliftonhill as they face an Albion Rovers side who sit just above them in the league table.

The boss couldn’t hide his disappointment at Saturday’s first-half performance against Alloa, but hoped they could continue on from a much-improved second 45 showing.

He said: “We could have been a few goals behind at half-time.

“But we were a bit better in the second half and we’ve got to look to build on that.

“Albion Rovers is a place I’ve been to before and it’s always likely to be difficult there.”

Paul McManus, Gareth Wardlaw, Darren McCormack and Jordon Forster are amongst those struggling to be fit for the trip west.

Meanwhile East Fife have moved to clarify some “ill-founded” reports regarding the club’s financial position.
