BILLY Brown’s first game in charge at Bayview saw him have to read the riot act to his new side at half-time.

Brown admitted after the game that his side’s first 45 showing had been “unacceptable” and let his players know it during the interval.

The Fifers went down to a solitary first half Graeme Holmes strike but, in truth, could have been out of the game by half-time.

Boss Brown said: “We were so poor in the first half that the second could hardly be any worse.

“We could have been a few goals behind; it was unacceptable.

“We had to say two or three things to sort two or three things out and it had an effect, because we were a bit better in the second half.

“But it should be taken for granted that you play with that sort of appetite and tenacity.”

The Fifers had got off to a reasonable start with Stephen Simmons needed to cut out a Bobby Barr cross which was destined to pick out Scott McBride.

But Alloa soon eased themselves into the game and began to take control.

Holmes curled an effort inches wide before Martin Grehan sent a header past the post from six yards.

Then arrived Holmes’ goal, when he collected a loose ball on the edge of the six-yard box and fired high into the East Fife net.

The Fifers had Calum Antell to thank for keeping to scoreline down when he reacted well to stop a Darren Young drive.

Brown’s words were still ringing in the East Fife players’ ears when they came out for the second 45 and did seem to have a renewed sense of impetus.

East Fife will do well to keep hold of Barr when his loan spell is up.

The tricky winger again caused problems for the Wasps and picked out David Muir as the hosts searched for an equaliser.

Muir, though, could only fire his strike into the side netting.

Scott Durie tried his luck from range as the clock ticked down.
