Last weekend saw the fifth successful exchange between Cupar Soccer 7s 1999s team, Cupar Wanderers, and Argonne F.C. from Cupar’s twin town of Sainte Menehould in France.
Thirteen children and five adults from the French club spent the weekend playing football and seeing some of the attractions in Cupar and the surrounding area. The weekend was rounded off with a dinner in Cupar YMCA/YWCA where club representatives, including veterans from the first Cupar visit to Sainte Menehould in 2006, met with the French visitors.
Cupar coach Mike Melville said: “The weekend was pretty much perfect, from the weather to all the activities, and all the children - both from Cupar and Sainte Menehould - thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was great to be able to renew our friendships with our counterparts from Argonne F.C.’’
“Highlights included the swimming session at the East Sands Leisure Centre and the presentation to both teams by Raith Rovers’ French star Gregory Tade. The Argonne children were obviously thrilled to meet a French professional playing in Scotland and Gregory spent a lot of time speaking to the children as well as getting photographs taken.
“ A lot of people worked very hard to make the weekend a success, not least the mums who provided the catering for the weekend!
“The club is particularly grateful for the support of the Cupar and Howe of Fife Twinning Association, Fife Council, Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, Cupar YMCA/YWCA, R.A.F Leuchars and Raith Rovers F.C. in making the weekend such a success as well as local businesses who supported our fundraising efforts, especially Kettle Produce.
“Having visited France last year and hosted Argonne this year, we are hoping that another team from within the club will be able to visit Sainte Menehould next year.”
