Late goal misery as Glens miss chance

Dundonald Bluebell 1, Glenrothes Juniors 0

Glenrothes went into this local derby without Grierson, who suffered a broken ankle in a midweek training session, and Meikle.

The home side started the match with five ex Glens players in their ranks.

The first chance fell to the home side with Elder shooting high and wide, followed by a long range effort by Orrock which slipped by the post.

Glenrothes had the ball in the net early doors but the linesman flagged for offside. The home side thought they had got off the mark in 20 minutes when an effort by Wallace was cleared off the line by Scott Bissett. At the other end Martin had an excellent run and cross which reached Griffin but the defence managed to clear.

In a fast flowing game Dundonald’s Wallace broke clear but his cross missed everybody. Glens then conceded a free kick twenty five yards from goal, but the defence cleared the danger.

A corner was punched over the bar by Gay who claimed he was fouled but his protestations only led to him being booked. The weather deteriorated and the wind and rain were playing havoc with the ball.

Glenrothes replaced Sawers with Moffat at half time and as the second half got underway a shot from Young was held by Gay. Martin then had a chance but his effort was wide.

With the wind at their backs Glens were inclined to over hit the ball, but came close when a twenty five yard effort by Martin was pushed round the post by Lennox and the resultant corner was cleared off the line.

Shortly after Dundonald broke free and a dangerous attack was only halted by an excellent tackle from Kinnes.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 85th minute when Glens yet again conceded a free kick on the edge of the box and when the defence failed to clear Young headed home.

Glenrothes were now running out of time and thought they had equalised in injury time but Scott Napier’s effort was cleared off the line.

The game finished with the three points going to Dundonald but with goal line clearances for both sides Glens were undone by the set piece.
