THERE was a boost for Raith Rovers loan star David Smith this week after he was picked for the Scotland Under 21s.
Smith, currently on loan from Hearts, was named in Billy Stark’s squad that travelled to Spain for the Marbella Cup.
The 19-year-old, who can play up front or on either wing, has previously represented his country at U16, U17 and U19 level - but this is his first call-up to the U21s.
Raith boss Grant Murray was delighted to see the youngster, who has started Rovers last two games, given yet more international recognition.
“It’s a great boost for every party involved,” he said.
“First of all, it’s a great achievement for himself, and for Hearts, but it’s also great from our point of view.
“You never know who’s sitting in the stand watching you, and David has obviously impressed Billy Stark enough for him to be included.
“Since he came here he’s certainly impressed us, and that’s why he’s in the team.
“We were delighted to get David on board just before the transfer window closed.
“I obviously knew him as a team mate last season when John (McGlynn) brought him in on loan.
“I played behind him at full back so I knew what he gave a team, and that was one of the reasons why I was delighted to get him.”
Scotland face USA tomorrow (Friday) before playing Canada on Monday.
