Newburgh recorded a comfortable 6-0 win against bottom of the table Coupar Angus on Saturday to maintain their promotion push
Peter Jones received a starting place for the first time and David Gray moved back from midfield into defence.
Steven Harris replaced Chris McLeish in the forward line.
The ‘Burgh breakthrough came after 24 minutes when a shot from David Gray bounced in front of the Coupar Angus ‘keeper catching him off balance allowing the ball to bounce up and over him into the net.
It didn’t take Newburgh long to double their advantage when Scott Finlay side stepped a pair of defenders on the edge of the box and slotted his drive into the corner of the net.
With two minutes of the first half remaining Dean Elder beat the ‘keeper from an acute angle.
Coupar Angus stated the second period in a brisker fashion than they ended the first and were unlucky not to break their duck when a speculative drive smashed the crossbar.
Shortly after this Harris increased the ‘Burgh lead with a scrambled goal on the 52nd minute. Within 2 minutes Harris doubled his tally from the penalty spot following a poor challenge by the goalkeeper on Finlay who was bearing in on goal.
Coupar Angus held Newburgh out from this pint until the 87th minute when substitute Chris McLeish, who had been rested from the starting line up, beat two defenders and made enough space for himself to drive a shot under the keeper into the goal.
Manager Graham Nicoll was pleased with the points.
He said: “It is important that we remain professional in games like this where, with all respect to Coupar Angus, we are facing a side from the lower end of the division.”
Newburgh travel to Lochee Harp on Saturday.
