We didn’t work hard enough to progress

St Andrews United face a Halloween replay against Oakley United this weekend following their draw at Barnetts Park on Saturday.

United boss Phil McGuire has demanded his side learn from the mistakes which saw Saints have to come from behind against their Premier League opponents.

“I felt the work-rate was there but we used too much energy closing down in either wrong areas or not as a group and as an individual,” said McGuire.

“This causes its own problems primarily to our shape.

“We did not work hard enough though with the ball or to get on the ball which annoys me, we failed to test Oakley enough and they were happy to soak up the play and try to counter.

“Oakley will always cause you problems and they will once again in the replay.

“We must improve if we want to progress in the cup and must match everything that Oakley have to offer, looking to play ourselves to create and open them up.

“Saturday’s replay will be far from easy but I think we will have learnt enough to be able to counter our opponents and come out of the clash with a positive result and a place in next week’s draw.”

Supporters are advised that kick off at Blairwood Park is at 2.00p.m.

United’s clash with Oakley is followed by two further trips away from Barnetts Park.

Saturday, November 7 sees them travel to Sauchie in the Super League and is then a visit to face Linlithgow Rose seven days later.
