SPRINGFIELD man Jim Gales has returned victorious from the Conrad German Disabled Open Golf Chamiponship after a near ‘clean sweep’.

The event, held in Weiden near Nuremburg was attended by almost 70 golfers from 15 nations around Europe and was played at the Schwanhof Golf Club, one of Germany’s top five courses.

Jim, who is a blind golfer, and founder member of the Scottish Disability Golf Partnership, was accompanied by his regular sighted guide, Paul Shepherd of Tayport, said: “This was my first trip to Germany and with such a large field attending from countries like Switzerland, Spain and the Czech Republic and top quality golfers like Manuel De Las Santos, who has competed at the Dunhill Cup, I wasn’t expecting too much success.

“Paul and I fully intended to go, enjoy ourselves and sample our first European event and get some good golf, company and German beer”.

Jim returned with two competition round scores of 38 and 40 points to win the title and was also the winner of his handicap category at the event.

Additionally, he was given a Taylor Made Shadow putter as a prize for the nomination of the Conrad Charity Award, which has only been awarded on seven previous occasions.

Jim leaves this weekend for the Scotland v England Ryder Cup match and then shortly after heads off to the US for their Open Championships.
