Fraser celebrates winning Fife return

JUST a couple of weeks afer winning the first amateur tournament of the new Scottish golf season, Fraser McKenna was back in east Fife to taste further glory.
Fraser, of Balmore Golf Club, near Glasgow, is the new Battle Trophy champion, winning the Crail Golfing Society amateur event with a four- round 10-under par score of 278.
The success followed hard on the heels of his victory at Leven in the Scottish Champion of Champions event.
Fraser (21) won the Crail contest by a margin of four strokes over nearest challenger David Booth of Rotherham, who is the current Scottish Youth’s champion.
The Battle Trophy is a world amateur ranking and Scottish Order of Merit event, played over 72 holes on Crail Golfing Society’s newer course, the 6722-yard Craighead Links.
Fraser, who plays off a handicap of plus 2, is a member of the Scottish Golf Union’s elite squad and spent eight weeks over the winter training with the squad in South Africa.
“The Battle Trophy is attracting the cream of Scottish golf, with 60 per cent of the field playing off scratch or better, and Fraser’s victory was very well deserved,” said Crail Golfing Society captain Richard Clifford (pictured with Fraser, left).
“We understand he may be turning professional later this year and he will certainly have our good wishes.”
The highest placed local player, in eighth place on 289, was plus one handicapper Ewan Scott, of St Andrews.
Ewan (16) is a past victor on Craighead Links, having won Crail’s Junior Open there, aged just 11, with a scratch score of 69.
