Golf duo propel Scots to win

LEVENMOUTH golfing aces James White and Brian Soutar played a key role as Scotland’s amateur golfers toasted victory in the Home Internationals.

The Scots celebrated a win for the first time since 2006 – thanks to a little help from the English.

On a thrilling final day’s play at Glasgow Golf Club’s Gailes Links, the Scots powered to a 9½-5½ win over Wales and were then reliant on an English victory over Ireland – which duly arrived.

James White’s result earned Scotland the Raymond Trophy on a countback thanks to their superior ‘goal difference’ after the hosts, Ireland and England all finished on two points each.

It was Scotland’s first win on home soil since tasting success at Carnoustie 12 years ago and marked a superb comeback by Scott Knowles’ men, having been shaded 8-7 by Ireland in the opening match.

Brian Soutar (Leven GS, pictured right) was edged out two and one in his match against Wales but White (left, Lundin) kept up an impressive unbeaten run by ousting Welsh number one Rhys Pugh three and two, to make it five points from six for the Lundin player.

Delighted team leader Knowles was full of praise for his players.

“It’s a great feeling to win and doing it in Scotland makes it even more special,” he said.

“Although the foursomes matches were tight, we were confident we could reach our target of nine and a half points in the singles.
