Third place for golfing ace Derek

Derek Milne

UPPER Largo golfer Derek Milne has returned from the British Disabled Open where he claimed a third place from a field of over 60 golfers.

The event was staged at the East Sussex National Course and was Derek’s first major disabled golf event outside Scotland.

Derek (right), a member at Charelton Golf Club, said: “Rain hit play on day one and certainly messed up some score cards and, if it wasn’t for one bad hole of mine on day two, who knows what could have been.”

Derek, who for the last 13 years has run a boarding cattery with his wife Morag and his new foster family, served in the Armed Forces until a road accident in 1985 left him with no fingers on his left hand.

He added: “After my accident, I lost a lot of confidence and it wasn’t until I came across the SDGP in 2009 and its programme of golf lessons and competition that I managed to gain enough confidence to compete.”
