Eight year old Anna McKay, from Crail, has just returned from a two-week trip to the home of American golf, Pinehurst in North Carolina, where she tied second in the US Kids World Golf Championships.

Playing against 42 other eight-year-old girls in an international field, from countries as diverse as Japan, Australia and Guatemala, Anna’s total score for three nine hole rounds was 112 – just four over par.

She even managed an eagle three on one of the par five holes. Anna was the only competitor from the UK in her age category.

A junior member of Crail Golfing Society, she qualified for the World Championships twice over, first by winning the five to eight-year-old category in the Wee Wonders Grand Final in St Andrews last year, and then by coming third in the US Kids European Championship in June this year.

“Anna is an outstanding young golfer who has cut 20 strokes from her handicap in less than a year,” said Eric Morris, Crail Golfing Society’s current vice captain, who has been Junior Convenor for the last three years.

“She has been taking part in our highly successful junior programme for four years now and her progress has been extraordinary.”

The society’s junior programme runs from April to September each year and includes basic tuition from trained members, competitions by age and ability, and professional tuition from the Society’s assistant professional David Snodgrass. There are now over 50 youngsters enrolled in the programme.

Anna, who is also a member at Elie Sports Club, now has her eyes set on repeating last year’s success in the upcoming Wee Wonders Grand Final over the St Andrews Links Balgove course at the end of this month

Crail Golfing Society is the seventh oldest golf club in the world and has two 18 hole courses: Balcomie Links, laid out in 1895 by Tom Morris, and Craighead Links, designed by Gil Hanse and opened in 1998. The Society has over 1,400 members all over the world.
