Watsonians.........................61

Howe of Fife..........................17

It was another heavy defeat for Howe as table-topping Watsonians clinched the Division One title.

But there was a sliver lining for the local club, as results elsewhere secured their league safety.

Angus Guthrie kicked Howe into the lead after just over a minute’s play but Scott McLeod replied with a try which was converted by Andrew Chalmers, .

After 13 minutes Watsonians stole a Howe lineout and moved it all the way to the left wing for McKean to score and Chalmers converted.

Howe were pushed over their line for a try by their former player Rory Drummond which was converted.

Howe then came to life with a good try off a lineout, putting together some phases of play before Robert Lind, a university student playing at number 8, made it through to the line for Guthrie to convert.

Before the interval Watsonians got their bonus point try when their scrum half Reiss Cullen nipped away to score and Chalmers converted.

However they turned up the heat in the third quarter with a further four tries.

McKean ran on for his second try, and then claimed his third try.

A lineout drive brought a try for wing forward Ewan Miller, and then Jonathan Neary scored.

Chalmers missed the conversion.

Howe soldiered on, producing some quite decent moves from time to time, and it was from one of these moves, again running through many phases of play, that Stewart Lathangie scored for Guthrie to convert.

The last score was by second row Romain Denonain who supported a long diagonal run from right wing Mark Bertram, and Chalmers made his eighth conversion for the final score of 61-17.

Elsewhere Peebles lost their fight for survival by losing to Edinburgh Accies and so they and Kelso will be in Division Two next time around.
