WHEN Kirkcaldy ice hockey starlet Beth Scoon takes to the ice next Saturday it will be the best day of her life.

For the S6 Balwearie High School pupil has been chosen to captain the Under 18 Great Britain Women’s team.

And she is all set to lead her team at the World Championship qualifiers, which will be held in Dumfries from October 27 to November 1.

Team GB will face tough opposition from teams from China, Italy, France, Kazakhstan and Slovakia in a bid to secure one of the top two places in the tournament.

The top two qualifying teams will go forward to represent their countries at the World Championships which are being held in Switzerland in January.

Beth (17), who has played ice hockey from the age of eight, and plays with the Fife Falcons mixed team in Kirkcaldy as well as the Kingston Diamonds ladies premier team in Hull, said: “I am so excited about taking part in the World Championship qualifiers.

“It will certainly be the best day of my life so far to lead team GB onto the ice and it will be even better as the tournament is being held in Scotland.

“We are seeded in top place after we finished fifth in the last World Championships at the beginning of this year in Tromso, Norway, when I was assistant captain.

“Some of the older girls have moved up to the senior age group, but I think we still have a strong enough team. Hopefully we will play well and take one of the top places to go forward to the Worlds.

“This is my last year at U18 level and to captain a successful qualifying campaign in Scotland and go on to the Worlds would be the perfect end to my time at junior level.

“I can’t wait to start playing and lots of my friends and family are coming along to watch, which will make it extra special.”
