WHEN this season’s ice hockey fixture list handed Fife Flyers a free weekend in October, at first Todd Dutiaume was disappointed.

However, the player-coach now reckons that the weekend break from action may be a blessing in disguise for his team.

First line forward Jason Pitton suffered a blow to the ribs against Belfast Giants on Sunday and was unable to ice during the third period.

He would have been ruled out of any games this weekend but Dutiaume hopes he will be fit to face Sheffied Steelers at Fife Ice Arena a week on Saturday.

“I was disappointed at first when I saw we had a week off, but it might work out okay,” Dutiaume said.

“You don’t want to be taking weeks off in the middle of a season because you can sometimes lose momentum.

“But Jason took a pretty bad knock against Belfast, and we have some other guys nursing bumps and bruises.

“It might be good time for us to have two full weeks to prepare for Sheffield and make it our main focus.

“We’ll have some extra training sessions to keep us going.”
