ALLAN CROW on the coaches’ reaction to Fife’s stunning 5-1 win
The win was as emphatic as the scoreline suggested with Flyers three up inside ten minutes - their first coming just nine seconds into the game.
They tormented netminder Garrett Zemlak on his return to Fife Ice Arena with his new club, and the fans didn’t miss him either!
Kriss Hogg and Caisey Haimes both netted doubles with John Dolan adding the fifth as Fife comprehensively outshot, and outplayed, their west coast rivals.
And Clan bench bench coach, former Flyers’ star Frank Morris, admitted, they deserved the win.
‘‘They came out like dambusters,‘‘ he said. ‘‘They wanted it more than us - we were beaten through and through. We were never really in the game.’’
Morris fully admitted conceding a goal so soon was out of the blue, but added: ‘‘Two more powerplay goals and the game was really over in the first.’’’
He also praised Zemlak for his handling of a hot night in the rink.
The former Fife keeper wasn’t missed by a noisy, fired-up crowd, but Morris said: ‘‘There was a lot of pressure on Garrett. There was a lot of negativity, but that’s part of hockey and I accept that. I thought he didn’t have a good first period but in the second and third he made the saves to keep us in the game, and that’s the sign of a good goalie.
‘‘But, as a team, we can’t come into this building and play like that. If we do, we will lose - simple as that.’’
Morris believes Fife will test many clubs across the league this year.
‘‘Their imports are good, the team is sharper, they are all in good shape. They are a much improved side. They have really excellent defencemen ... and they could still bring in two guys!’’
In Fife’s dressing-room, player coach Todd Dutiaume was delighted with the win - which counted for both league and Challenge Cup - and the performance.
The lightning start lit the fuse for a solid win.
‘‘Last week was 15 seconds, and tonight it was nine ... it’s been a while since we have done that!’’ he said.
‘We spent an extensive amount of time on our skating in training and tonight was the hardest the guys have skated. It takes it toll for sure, but they worked really hard.
‘‘The work ethic really won the game for us.’’
