Hat-trick hero Hoggs the limelight
FIFE Flyers humbled big-spending Sheffield Steelers - and their star NHL signing - with a deserved 4-2 victory at Fife Ice Arena on Saturday night.
All the talk in the build-up was of Tom Sestito, the NHLer who joined Sheffield direct from Philadelphia Flyers in time to make his UK debut in Kirkcaldy.
But it was the home team that stole the show, in particular Canadian marksman Kris Hogg, whose brilliant hat-trick helped Flyers to their first ever Elite League win over the Steelmen.
The performance left player-coach Todd Dutiaume delighted.
“This team keeps exceeding expectations,” he said.
“People were maybe expecting us to fall after our good start to the season but this was another great performance by the guys.
“We have a lot of faith in this room, and we’re happy with the way we’re playing.
“We absorbed an injury to a big player (Jason Pitton) and we’ve still managed to get the points.
“That says a lot about this hockey club and our hard work.”
The first period ended goalless before Sestito opened his account to give Steelers the lead 1.38 into period two. However, Flyers quickly hit back as Hogg brought them level on 23.27, before further goals on 32.16 and 38.58 completed a sensational 15-minute hat-trick.
Jeff Legue pulled one back for the visitors midway through the third period but Steven McAlpine sealed Flyers’ win with the fourth two minutes from time.
Hat-trick hero Hogg claimed the man of the match award, and praise from coach Dutiaume.
“We knew what we were getting when we signed Kris - and we’ve been expecting that from him,” Dutiaume said.
“His offensive skating made him a threat all night, and he must have had nine or 10 shots on net.
“We were misisng Jason so maybe he took a little bit more responsibility on his shoulders - and he shone out there.
“He’s upped the bar for himself as well and we’d like him to keep that rolling.”
Flyers were brought back down to earth on Sunday, crashing to a 5-2 defeat at Edinburgh Capitals in a Gardiner Conference match.
