Crews prepare for skiff regatta
St Ayles Skiffs
LOCAL St Ayles skiff teams have been confirmed to take part at a regatta in Aberdeen later in the summer.
Rowers from Anstruther, Pittenweem and Crail will be among those at the Asset Management Scottish Traditional Boat Festival which is set to become the biggest ever St Ayles skiff coastal rowing regatta.
The community crews will battle it out with 15 other wooden boats from around the country in a bid to be crowned kings and queens of the waves.
The festival, now in its 19th year, takes place in the village of Portsoy on the north-east coast of Scotland on June 23 and 24.
Roger Goodyear, chairman of the festival, said: “We are delighted that there will be such as strong contingent from Fife taking part in this historic event.
“This will be the third year that the festival has staged a St Ayles skiff regatta, and the record numbers entered underlines the strength of the current coastal rowing resurgence.
“I know that all the teams are very excited in taking part in some very good natured competition against so many other community-built skiffs.”
Last year the club from Anstruther achieved notable success across all the different race classes in the Portsoy regatta, and finished third in the overall championship.
Crail and Pittenweem did not participate in 2011, so will be looking to make their mark this year.
