EMMA Mitchell helped Glasgow City pick up their first piece of seasonal silverware – and then set her sights on forcing her way into the national team.
City beat Spartans 5-1 at Recreation Park, Alloa, recently to secure the Premier League Cup, with the Buckhaven footballer among the goals.
It capped off a good few days for Emma, as she had not long before added another Scotland cap to her collection against Sweden at Stark’s Park.
And that experience has whetted her appetite for more international involvement with the UEFA Women’s Euro 2013 championships around the corner.
She told the Mail: “I’ve been involved with Scotland before in Cyprus and Sweden and I think that game was my sixth or seventh cap.
“But it’s very difficult to break into the Scotland team because there are a lot of experienced players in the squad and I’m still young.
“If I can keep doing what I’m doing, and training my hardest, then hopefully I can take my chance when it comes.”
The game was played out to over 1000 football fans in Kirkcaldy – a sign, Emma says, that the women’s game is slowly picking up momentum in this country.
However, we still lag some-way behind other nations in supporting women’s football, with Emma admitting she may have to move to foreign shores to taste the game as a full-time professional.
She said: “Playing for your country, and also in the Champions League (where Glasgow City reached the latter stages), is great because you don’t know who could be watching you.
“It’s a good opportunity for me to play against the bigger teams and my ambition is to play full-time.
“Countries like America, Germany, and now France as well all have good women’s leagues.”
City’s cup win was their first this season, with the side looking set to add more.
The all-conquering side currently sits top of the Scottish Women’s Premier League table, having played nine, won them all, scored 76 goals and conceded just four.
“It was great to get the first piece of silverware,” Emma said.
“We set a standard for ourselves and want to win every league game of the season.
“We’ve already beaten Celtic and Hibs, who are two of the best sides in the league.
“I’ve been asked to play a lot further up the park and have been enjoying it.
“Since I’ve been here I’ve played everywhere – I’ll be in goals next.”
