WINDYGATES Brisca F2 Stock Car ace Gordon Moodie has won the 2012 European Championship, held recently at Northampton International Raceway.

The race was run over 25 laps of the circuit and headed in the early stages by Northern Irish racer Craig McConnell.

The black number seven car of Moodie, though, quickly moved to third place after a couple of laps before he caught and passed McConnell.

He soon built up a big lead and, with around 10 laps to go, the race looked all over.

However, there was drama when a Dutch racer crashed and his car was left across the track.

Moodie tried to go down the inside of the stricken car, just as the Dutch star tried to move it to the infield, causing a full-speed collision and forcing the race to be stopped.

The local driver quickly built up a big lead again after the re-start but still the drama was not over, as the engine on his number seven started to misfire.

Fortunately, Moodie had enough of a lead over second-placed Jack Aldridge from Oxfordshire to take the chequered flag and become European Champion for the third time in his career.

After the race, Moodie said: “It was a good draw for me on grid nine but there were a lot of competitive guys close to me, like Jack Aldridge, and others like Craig McConnell.

“I did not want to lose too much time battling at the start of the race and I gradually got in the lead.

“It was all looking good before I saw the H265 car on the back straight and there was a car on the outside of me, so I thought I would go to the inside of the crashed car. However, just at that moment, it moved straight in my path and I hit it.

“I was lucky that the car was not damaged.

“The knock, though, did result in a misfire late in the race but I had enough of a lead to still manage to win it.”

Gordon’s next race will be the semi-final of the World Championship on August 5.
