STAR Hearts welcomed Danderhall Miners Welfare in the second round of the Scottish Cup.
Confusion in the box between the Star ‘keeper and defence allowed Danderhall to open the scoring before Ryan Thomson pulled the sides level.
Star’s celebrations were short-lived as Danderhall pushed from the restart and edged further in front.
A second-half cross found John Shields, who directed the ball past the Danderhall keeper to put Star back on level terms.
Star then pushed for another goal.
Martyn Thomson launched an inch-perfect pass to John Shields, who buried the ball in the back of the Danderhall net. For the first time in the game, Star were in front and the visiting fans fell silent.
Star’s fourth goal came by way of some great play from Thomson, who took on and beat three visiting players before launching a great cross ball for Ryan Thomson to place in the top corner of the opposition goal.
Danderhall were not down and out, though, and a great run and some individual skill saw them get a goal back late in the game.
It wasn’t to be, though. As Danderhall threw men forward to try and grab a last-gasp equaliser, a clearance from the Star half found Ryan Thomson alone, with two Danderhall players in pursuit.
The Star man coolly chipped the visiting keeper to claim his hat-trick and five counters for Star on the day.
