TWO local runners are heading south to take up the challenge of the Great North Run.

Gary Ovenstone, originally from St Monans, and Michael Reilly, of Anstruther, will be running to raise money for St Andrews-based cancer research charity AICR (Association for International Cancer Research).

Gary and Michael will join 50,000 other runners in this year’s event, which will see them run from Newcastle to South Shields.

The Great North Run is one of the world’s biggest half marathons and one of the most popular events in a runner’s calendar.

Gary said: “I’m excited to be taking part in the event and it’s a great excuse to raise money for a very worthwhile cause at the same time.

“Everyone has been really supportive so far and I’d like to say thanks to the many well-wishers who have seen me out pounding the streets of St Andrews recently, and have tooted their horns in support!”

Both men say they’ve been overwhelmed by the level of support shown by local businesses in St Andrews and around the East Neuk.

Michael said they were particularly grateful to Colin Cromer of Tailend Restaurant in St Andrews and Robert Adamson, Hair Design in Pittenweem, for allowing them to place collection tins in their premises.

“We all know someone who has been affected by cancer and raising money for AICR was an ideal choice,” he added.

If you would like to sponsor Gary and Michael, donations are accepted in the collection tins at Tailend Restaurant and Robert Adamson Hair Design.

Donations will also be accepted at the Hardies Offices in Largo Road and at the main AICR office in Madras House.
