THE Carnegie Masters once again excelled at the Scottish Masters Swimming Championships held at Scotstoun Leisure Centre.

Carnegie Masters numbers have grown to seven this year and they returned from the championships with a very impressive 19 gold medals, four silver and eight bronze.

Competing in the 35-39 age group Janet McLean from Freuchie was in outstanding form with a total of six gold medals from six swims.

Not surprisingly, Janet was awarded the trophy as the top female swimmer in her age group.

Her successes ranged from 400m and 200m individual medley titles, 400m and 200m freestyle titles and 200m and 100m butterfly titles.

Wendy Szaranek from Glenrothes moved up this year to the 45-49 age group and made an impressive debut, winning the trophy for the top female swimmer in the age group and also the Speedo breaststroke sprint trophy.

Wendy won a total of seven gold medals and national titles.

Lara Ferguson from Leslie, competing in the 30-34 age group, returned from the championships with a national title for 100m freestyle in her age group and silver medals for 100m breaststroke, 100m individual medley and 50m breaststroke.

Elaine Gillies from Glenrothes, competing in the 40-44 age group similarly had a fine championships, picking up bronze medals for 100m individual medley, 100m freestyle and 50m breaststroke.

Completing the female Carnegie Masters line-up, Joanna Laing from Springfield, competing in the 35-39 age group, won silver medals for 50m and 100m breaststroke

The Carnegie Masters swimmers also performed well in the relays.

A mixed team of Janet, Wendy, Craig Holmes and Robert Aird in the 120-159 years group won a bronze medal in the four x 50m medley, and followed that up with a bronze medal in the four x 50m freestyle.

The women’s team was entered for the 160-199 years relay of Janet, Lara, Wendy and Elaine and once again they won gold in both the four x 50m medley the four x 50m freestyle.
