New boy Billan secures 3-2 Kennoway win
KENNOWAY Amateurs travelled to face Benarty in the semi-final of the Taylor Sullivan Funeral Directors Cup at the weekend on the back of two midweek victories away from home.
Kennoway quickly started to settle into their usual playing style of probing runs and pressing defenders to make a mistake, but it was Benarty who opened the scoring.
The referee awarded a penalty having judged that a home player was fouled inside the box.
Ex-Kennoway player Rikki McCafferty calmly put the ball beyond the ‘keeper to put Benarty 1-0 up.
Kennoway did not lose heart, though, and soon were pushing the Benarty defence yet again, winning a corner kick.
The ball was delivered at pace and headered back across the Benarty goal for Kennoway player Martyn Thomson to get his head to it and put it past the home side’s ‘keeper to level the match.
It was the hosts who grabbed the lead yet again through McCafferty, a fast counter attack ending in the ball being knocked beyond the Kennoway ‘keeper.
Kennoway kept their nerve, though, and started to assert themselves more and more on the game and there was a feeling that a goal was inevitable.
Benarty were resorting to spoiling play as the visitors’ attacks became more frequent and it wasn’t long before Kennoway themselves were awarded a penalty.
Thomson was the man who took the high pressure kick and equalised the scores yet again, taking his and Kennoway’s tally for the day to two goals.
It wasn’t long before the visitors got a third after being awarded a free kick in a dangerous area.
A high ball was played in which was knocked back for Kennoway player David Thomson to drill in the shot.
The Benarty ‘keeper could only palm it into the crossbar with the rebound falling to Kennoway new boy, Matt Billan, who did not hesitate to bury the ball into the back of the home side’s net and put Kennoway through to the final.
The Kennoway players and fans were ecstatic and the Benarty fans were devastated but overall neither side can complain, a hotly contested cup semi-final between two well matched teams.
