Pittenweem triumph as Kirkcaldy see triple red
ROVERS welcomed Kirkcaldy YM to Pittenweem for a quarter-final tie in the Taylor Sullivan Cup and ran out 5-3 winners.
Pittenweem went ahead after seven minutes when Liam Tarvit found Neale Smith in the YM box and the Rovers’ skipper back-heeled the ball into the path of Craig Cameron, who made no mistake from close range. Kirkcaldy equalised with 25 minutes played when they took a free kick from the right touchline and their centre-half headed the ball into the corner of the net.
Pittenweem regained the lead with just over half an hour played, when Cameron made a good run down the left and crossed to the back post where Derek Ireland volleyed the ball into the net.
On the stroke of half-time, Rovers’ defence failed to clear a ball into the box and it fell to a YM player who put it into the net.
Pittenweem went ahead again three minutes into the second half when a Craig Cameron shot was parried by the YM ‘keeper and Derek Ireland was on hand to put the rebound into the net.
Kirkcaldy were reduced to 10 men but continued to make life difficult for Pittenweem and were rewarded after 63 minutes when they scored from the penalty to make it 3-3.
Kirkcaldy had a second player sent off with 10 minutes remaining and Rovers took advantage to regain the lead.
The visitors were reduced to eight men with a couple of minutes remaining and Craig Cameron scored a fifth goal.
Saturday’s match ball was sponsored by Billy Auld.
