A VETERAN Kirkcaldy pool ace was just short of potting a top award at the World Championships in Blackpool.

Paul McGowan was competing for Scotland in the World Seniors competition, for players over 50, and helped his country to fifth place overall.

But Paul just missed out on an individual award, finishing runner-up in the player of the tournament table.

Paul – who won the Scottish Seniors individual title earlier this year and was a quarter-finalist in the World Senior singles last year – said: “I won 60 per cent of my matches playing for Scotland, which was good enough to get me second place in the players’ table. I’m quite pleased with the way I played.”

Despite taking up pool just two years ago, Paul is no stranger to having a cue in his hand.

He was Scottish Boys Billiards Champion in 1976 and has won a host of tournaments over the last four decades at both billiards and snooker, as well as representing his country at international level. He was also a top snooker coach.

Paul said: “I took up pool because it’s played on a smaller table. My eyesight is not as good as it was and I struggled to see the far end of the snooker table because it is longer, so I couldn’t compete at the top level.

“I’m enjoying playing pool and hopefully there will be more successes to follow in the future.”
