AN Easter Monday downpour put paid to Jonny Adam’s hopes of a good start to the new British GT racing season.

The Kirkcaldy driver, along with team mate Andrew Howard, qualified on the front row of the grid for the first two races of 2012, held at Oulton Park, and a podium placing for the Beechdean Aston Martin team looked on the cards.

However, when the heavens opened on race day, their brand new car – the Aston Martin V12 Vantage – struggled to cope with the wet track and the pair tumbled down the standings to finish ninth in race one, and 15th in race two.

“It was the first time the new car had been raced in the UK, and the first time we’ve had it out in wet conditions,” Adam told SportsPress.

“All our testing has been done in the dry – and we qualified really well getting second place on the grid for both races.

Potential

“Our pace was really good and the car showed a lot of potential, but on Monday it rained all day, and we really struggled.

“We’ve not managed to explore wet set-up so we had teething problems.

“It was a shame that we couldn’t get the results we deserved, as we feel we would have been on the podium if it was dry.

“But in a way it was good because we needed all this info to find out how the car works in the wet.

“This is its first year of racing so there’s still bits of development to be done to make sure it’s 100 per cent.

“It’s all about finding the car’s sweet spot, and once we get it in both conditions we’ll be bang on the money.”

Adam is confident that the team can recover from its disappointing start to mount a challenge for the British GT title.

“We’re disappointed not to walk away from the weekend with good points, but I’m sure we’ll make it up,” he said.

“There’s still six weekends to go and our pace is good, we just need to work it out for both conditions.

“There’s five weeks until the next race at the Nurburgring in Germany so we’ll have a couple more test days – and this time we’ll hope for rain!

“The good thing is we’re working with Aston Martin Racing and they knew straight away where the problems lay and have already made the adjustments it needs.”
