Sole strike seals famous Kennoway victory

A SIZEABLE crowd turned out in St Andrews to watch Kennoway claim a 1-0 win in the Fosters Fife Cup Final on Friday night, despite the relentless rain.
The match started as a typical cup final, with both sides concentrating more on settling on the ball rather than pushing forward.
Kennoway’s calm start, however, was almost undone midway in the first half. A break through the defence left Kennoway’s ‘keeper charging out his goal for a 50-50 ball with a Strathmiglo attacker.
A slip on the treacherous surface saw both players tumble to the ground and the Strathmiglo bench screaming for a red card.
The referee saw it differently, though, as the Kennoway ‘keeper was not the last man, so only the yellow card was shown.
As the first half entered its closing stages, Kennoway did have a few attacking opportunities of their own, but some heroic Strathmiglo goal-line defending and great goalkeeping denied them the opening goal.
Kennoway started much more determined in the second half and immediately pressed forward.
Kennoway thought they had taken the lead early on, only for the ‘goal’ to be disallowed for an infringement on the Strathmiglo ‘keeper, much to the annoyance of the Kennoway bench and support.
There was to be more annoyance when a second effort was again chopped off, this time for offside.
The condition of the pitch was causing its own problems by this time, with a number of Kennoway players receiving yellow cards owing to the slippery nature of the playing surface.
This led to Jamie Armitt being brought on and he immediately made a difference.
With 13 minutes to go, after a mistake by the Strathmiglo ‘keeper, who dropped the ball, Armitt pounced to knock it into the net for what proved the only goal of the game.
Strathmiglo went all out to try and grab an equaliser before the end but the Kennoway defence remained staunch in its duties and took care of the attacks.
At full time, the Kennoway bench ran on to the pitch to celebrate with the rest of the team, finally being crowned Fife champions at the fourth attempt.
