Strollers win 3-2 over plucky Newburgh

ON Saturday it was Newburgh who travelled to Methilhill to take on the Strollers.

The home team forced a corner in the first minute and nearly took the lead.

Then Newburgh had a chance, with their man shooting inches wide after 20 minutes.

The Strollers took the lead after 24 minutes when Phil Russell passed through to Paul Jenson.

Jenson made no mistake to make the score 1-0 at half time to Methilhill.

Newburgh tried to get themselves on level terms only for Calum Thompson to be brought down in the box. He dusted himself down, took the kick and scored to give the local side a two goal cushion.

Newburgh weren’t done, though, and went on the offensive.

Their hard work paid off when they pulled a goal back on 60 minutes when the Strollers could not clear their lines and the visiting number nine drilled a shot hard into the corner.

The Levenmouth side continued to press though and grabbed their third goal of the game on 65 minutes.

Paul Jenson ran down the right and crossed for James Good to score at the back post to make it 3-1 to Methilhill.

With minutes remaining, Newburgh scored a consolation goal when a deflected shot was saved by Darren Mathewson only for Newburgh’s number 10 to score.

Despite the nervy ending to the game, Methilhill managed to hold out to secure a hard fought win.
