Third round draw for the Swallows

ST MONANS Swallows advanced to the third round of the Scottish Cup with a narrow home win over Stirling district side Forth Thistle.

With a slight wind advantage, the hosts made the early running but failed to capitalise on a number of excellent corners from Bissett.

After 20 minutes, though, Swallows took the lead from yet another fine delivery from Bissett, which was headed across the goal by Ireland and then headed past the ‘keeper by Forth’s central defender for an own goal.

Swallows continued to press until the interval but failed to increase their lead, despite creating a number of good opportunities.

At the start of the second half, Forth made it 1-1 when the St Monans defence lost concentration and a through ball let in the opposition striker, who steered his low shot into the corner of the net.

Desperate to avoid having to travel for a replay, Swallows upped the tempo and took the lead when a Patterson cross was glanced past the ‘keeper for a second own goal.

Thistle’s chances probably ended when one of their players was red-carded for ungentlemanly conduct and the Swallows saw out the tie. Match day sponsor was David Budd, painter and decorator.
