The cross country season got off to a successful start with the first fixture of the winter the annual East District Cross Country Relay Championships in Livingston.

Fife AC’s strong senior women’s team of Annabel Simpson, Jen Spence and Halina Rees collected a brilliant bronze medal at the event behind Central AC, who won the race for an impressive fifth year in a row, and Edinburgh University.

Annabel Simpson kicked off with an excellent fourth place on leg one in 14.29, which was the sixth fastest split of the day.

Jen passed early leaders Lothian RC to take the team into third and Halina maintained the position to bring the team home in bronze medal position.

Fife AC’s Steph Pennycook was part of the silver medal winning Edinburgh University team, with her time of 14.01 the third fastest split of the day.

There was a hugely encouraging performance from Fife AC’s young senior men’s team of Sam Fernando, Tristan Rees, Harvey Rankin and Chris Russell.

The team placed ninth in what was three of the four team members’ debut over the senior distance.

Fife AC’s Logan Rees was part of the gold medal winning Edinburgh University team, who ended Central AC’s winning streak and won the club’s first East District Cross Country relays title since 1967.

Despite having had time out due to injury, second year student Logan’s time of 12.19 was the sixth fastest overall split and the second fastest U20 split of the day.

In the junior girls’ race, in which teams are made up of an U13, U15 and U17, Anna Hedley produced one of the club’s standout performances of the day.

U13 Anna led her team home over 30 seconds ahead of her nearest rival in 9.04, which was by far the fastest U13 split of the day and the fourth fastest junior girls’ split of the day.

U13 Anna Dalglish maintained the team’s lead with a brilliant solo run on leg two against the U15 girls, running 9.48 for the fourth fastest U13 split of the day.

The team eventually ended up in 10th behind winners Edinburgh AC, with U17 Megan Briers running the anchor leg in 11.26.

Finally, in the junior boys’ race, Fife AC’s team of U13 Jake Williamson, U15 Owen Keddie and U17 Craig Morris were 16th.
