The Royal and Ancient Golf Club’s Local Clubs’ Gold Medal Competition, regarded as the men’s strokeplay championship of St Andrews, was played over The Old Course on Sunday.
This was the 124th staging of the Gold Medal and again the cream of the crop from the north east Fife clubs competed in a good, but competitive, spirit.
The field of 59 was made up of 28 competitors from The St Andrews Golf Club, 13 from The New Golf Club, 13 from The University of St Andrews Golf Club and five from The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of
At the end of round one the lead was held by James Bunch of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews with a scratch score of 66, four shots clear of the field.
The twelve competitors with the lowest round one scores, and any ties for twelfth place, qualified for round two.
The qualifying score was 75, and 18 competitors made the cut, including Brian Young of The St Andrews Golf Club who won the Gold Medal in both of the last two years
After round two, the runner-up was Kevin Weir of The New Golf Club, with a 36-hole aggregate score of 144 (71 and 73).
The winner of the Gold Medal, and the 2014 Champion of the Links, with a 36-hole aggregate score of 134 (66 and 68) was James Bunch of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews.
