Denbeath swept aside St Andrews University in this First Division league match, despite strong winds making it difficult for both teams on the Savoy pitch.
Denbeath were up against it in the first half, playing into the wind, but still managed to take the lead when a long diagonal cross was met by Gary Armitt, who headed into the corner of the net.
The University had chances to draw level before the break but, on separate occasions, Denbeath ‘keeper Gear was lively to deny them.
Denbeath started to control things in the second half and it didn’t take long after the break for them to have the ball in the net again, only for Birrell to be flagged for a tight offside call.
Just after the hour mark, the ball was in the net for a third time and this time it did count. Connolly volleying home from a set piece that the University failed to clear.
The points looked to be in the bag and that was confirmed with 15 minutes to go when another Watson cross was headed into the roof of the net by Armitt, for his second and Denbeath’s third.
