A FORMER Kirkcaldy school pupil is starring for Team GB at the London Olympics.
Mark McGivern (29), an ex-pupil of the town’s St Andrews High, is competing in his first Olympics as part of the men’s volleyball team.
Mark, originally from Bellshill before his family moved to Fife, started playing volleyball in his fifth year at the high school after joining a lunchtime club.
He soon started training with Team Fife and, after a season, was asked to attend Scottish national team training.
He then spent a season each with City of Edinburgh and City of Glasgow Ragazzi, before moving to Sheffield to train full-time with the GB team.
From there, he went on to Holland with the GB squad to play as Martinus in the Dutch A league, and most recently has been with the Avignon club in France.
Mark, a middle blocker, won his 100th GB cap in June, and has featured in both matches in the Olympics thus far, 3-0 defeats to Bulgaria and Australia, results which have all but ended the team’s medal hopes.
