Alex Noren shot an opening round of 64 at Carnoustie and raced to the top end of the Dunhill Championship leaderboard.
But this year’s Aberdeen Asset Scottish Open winner admits he surprised even himself with his impressive round.
The 34-year-old Swede is clearly a fan of Scottish courses and claimed he had played “one of his best rounds” on Thursday.
However, he admitted he didn’t see the low score coming.
Noren said: “I like Carnoustie but I’ve never shot lower than maybe 71 here.
“I didn’t expect much but it went better than I expected.
“I putted great and got it going.
“It was tough conditions but probably one of the best rounds I’ve played, so I’m very happy right now.”
Looking ahead to Friday’s round, again the modest Swede played down his chances.
“I don’t have that high expectations for tomorrow.
“It’s just trying to get the practice in and work on the stuff I’ve been working on all year.”
