Leslie Bowling Club in weekend victory

Leslie’s good run of Wemyss League results continued with a 6-2 victory away to Kennoway B in a match which saw Leslie leapfrog their hosts in the league standings.

Leslie had built up a seemingly unassailable lead but a spirited fightback by the hosts meant things were uncomfortably close by the finish. Bill Cathro’s rink came up against a determined R. Cameron Jnr, who was out to avenge his rink’s two defeats of last season to Leslie. The game started off a tight affair with the home side leading 3-2 after 4 ends. Kennoway then stretched that lead to 13-3 before Cathro narrowed the advantage to 16-9 after 12 ends. Unfortunately Leslie were out bowled in the latter stages and failed to pick up another score to go down by 26-9. Derek Lowe’s rink struck a run of superb form to take an early 10-0 lead over N. Gordon. The Leslie President kept up the pressure to build up a 25 shot lead with five ends to go. Lowe extended his lead but there was a sting in the tail as Gordon took a 7 at the last end to give a more respectable look to the final score. David MacKenzie jnr’s game with J. Nicholson was the last match off the green and provided a nervous finish for the visitors. Mckenzie’s rink had been on fire in the early stages, taking a five and a six in successive ends. Nicholson managed to steady his team but looked to be chasing a lost cause when Leslie were still 11 up with three ends to go. End fifteen saw the Leslie rink posted missing, losing a four and only escaping even worse punishment thanks to a lucky promotion of a short bowl. A two at the sixteenth left Kennoway still five behind on the last end but some more wayward bowls left Leslie in trouble until third man Ryan Watson managed to get two bowls in the head and make it almost impossible for Nicholson to get the shots he needed. Mackenzie’s three shot victory gave Leslie four out of six individual rink points and ensured that they also collected the extra 2 points for the aggregate score. Result - Kennoway B 55 (2 points), Leslie 61 (6 points). Rink scores (Leslie skips first):- D. Mackenzie Jnr 20, J. Nicholson 18; D. Lowe 32, N. Gordon 11; W. Cathro 9, R. Cameron Jnr 26.
