The new world record set in the heavy events at this year’s Markinch Highland Games in June has been officially ratified by the Scottish Highland Games Association.
Gregor Edmunds from Glasgow launched the 28lb weight for distance out to a massive 95’ 10’’, smashing the previous record by 3’ 5’’.
the latter record was also set at Markinch in 1997 by Francis Brebner from Peterhead.
The distance was checked on the day by experienced judge, Alex Webster, and verified by the SHGA stewards who were on duty.
The weight then had to be taken away and to be checked over and weighed by the weights and measures inspector of Angus Council, witnessed by Alex and the result of the process indicated that the ball and chain weighed in excess of 28lb.
The record was officially ratified at the association’s post-season general council meeting held in Perth on Sunday.
The record is also recognised by the International Highland Games Federation.
