Cupar’s Lewis Nicol headed down to Oulton Park Racing Circuit in the Cheshire countryside for his first wildcard round at the British championship over the bank holiday weekend.

The Thistle racer was competing in the Santander Consumer Finance KTM British Junior Cup which is run alongside the British Superbike championship (BSB).

Saturday morning held free practice which was Lewis’s first time on the 390cc KTM machine and his first time round the 2.692 mile circuit of Oulton Park.

In his series debut, Lewis managed to bring the KTM machine back home with the second quickest lap time of a 2:22:921 lap time, just a second behind the championship leader.

Qualifying was held in sunny conditions and saw Lewis complete eight laps, but due to a suspension issue he only managed to put in a lap time which left him in 13th position for the race on Sunday.

The six lap race which was held in damp conditions on Sunday afternoon saw Lewis shoot to the front of the pack.

The schoolboy started the race from the back row on the grid and managed to make up an incredible 10 places on lap one to put him in third position.

By the end of the second lap Lewis was astonishingly leading the race of 16 other riders.

On the third lap of the sprint race, while Lewis was leading the race he touched oil on the track which resulted in him crashing while coming out of Hizzy’s Chicane.

Speaking after the weekend Lewis said: “I am delighted to have put in some great lap times at my first BSB round, although I was frustrated that I crashed during the race I enjoyed riding the KTM and learning a new circuit. I am also thrilled to have to have such good feedback and comment from everyone including series commentator Fred Clark and series organiser Stuart Higgs. “

Lewis has extended his thanks to all his sponosrs.
