Kirkcaldy Golf Club is hoping to attract new members and visitors by opening its course to the public next weekend.
The club is staging an Open Day on Sunday, August 25, that will let anyone play the course for a tenner, while club professional Anthony Caira will also be holding free golf clinics for juniors, ladies and gents.
The event has been organised by the club’s newly formed marketing committee, led by volunteer member Heather Stuart, which aims to restore the club’s good name after a diffcult few years.
Heather explained: “Our overall objective is raising the profile of the club again, and re-establishing the reputation of the course.
“We suffered a bit in recent years because of the condition of the course, but that’s no longer an issue for us. We think it’s pretty good again.
“We think we’ve got a lot to offer and hopefully the Open Day will help get us back on the map.”
After struggling through poor summers in recent years, the improved weather this year has given the club a timely boost.
Club captain Robert Mitchell explained: “The bad weather has had an impact in recent years, but we aren’t alone in that.
“We’ve had a great summer so far, and the course has recovered its condition tremendously well.
“We have invested a lot of money for a club this size to make sure the green-keeping staff have the equipment they need to get the course back up to standard. The greens are now playing the best they have for a number of years.
“Come to the Open Day and see what we’ve got to offer.
“People who have not played the course for a few years might come back and be surprised.”
Kirkcaldy GC has also been putting plenty effort into developing its junior section with Karin Sharp, one of Fife’s leading lady golfers, taking over as junior convener, helping run competitions for around 60 junior members aged between five and 18.
The section is certainly flourishing with the Kirkcaldy GC boys team of Michael Benvie, Ewan Diston, Jack Walsh and Liam Duncan winning the Fife Boys Team Chamionship in May.
Jenna Downie and Eilidh Henderson are also current members of the Fife Development Squad and participate in the Fife County Ladies Golfing Assocation junior competitions.
