Fresh from many successes at the Scottish Masters last month, Carnegie Masters Swimmers headed to Ponds Forge, Sheffield for the British Gas Masters Swimming Championships.
Unfortunately key squad member Wendy Szaranek from Glenrothes became poorly on the morning of departure and had to withdraw. Wendy won a total of seven gold medals and national titles at the 2012 Scottish Masters Championships and her absence was a great blow to the squad. Wendy was particularly missed as the fourth member of the Carnegie Masters relay squad that has been hugely successful nationally and internationally over the last few years.
Of the other local swimmers, Elaine Gillies from Glenrothes also continued her fine form with a bronze medal in 50m backstroke in 42.29. This is Elaine’s final year in the 40-44 age group and her record to date has been impressive. She finished her weekend in Sheffield with impressive swims in 100m freestyle, 50m freestyle and 50m breaststroke.
Lara Ferguson from Leslie was justifiably pleased with her 7th place finish in the 30-34 age group 100m breaststroke. Lara’s other performances were a 1:09.01 for 100m freestyle and 32.24 for 50m freestyle which confirmed clearly that she remains a key member of the squad and a top swimmer in a very competitive age group.
Another outstanding set of results at a major for Carnegie Masters who continue to fly the flag for Fife in major events at home and overseas.
