With two games left to play in ESCA Division 1, Dunnikier Cricket Club travelled to the capital to take on Edinburgh South in a must win game for both sides.
Dunnikier needed the points to keep their promotion challenge alive while Edinburgh South are fighting to avoid relegation.
Dunnikier won the toss and put Edinburgh into bat on hard, firm wicket.
Fareed and Shazad kept the bowling tight as they had done all season. Both were rewarded early on taking a wicket apiece, restricting Edinburgh to 30 for two after 14 overs.
Two more wickets fell leaving South struggling at 50 for 4 before a middle order revival of 50 runs took South to 90 for five.
The final five wickets however fell for only 27 runs and Edinburgh South finished 117 all out.
Chasing 118 for victory, however, would prove to be harder than Dunnikier’s batsmen thought.
Yousaf fell for four runs and star batsman Aziz followed in similar fashion for only three. This left Dunnikier in the mire at 13 for two.
Rowley and Rafi began the rebuilding for Dunnikier and with some careful batting rescued the situation putting on a patient 50 partnership.
At 86 for two the game looked to be Dunnikier’s – not according to Edinburgh South.
Wickets began to tumble at regular intervals as Dunnikier were wobbling at 112 for seven. The nerves were restored as Rafi, 54 not out, and Safi, 2 not out, eventually saw the Kirkcaldy side home with three wickets to spare.
Dunnikier remain in second place with Gala close behind in third. This leaves both teams fighting for that all important promotion place.
With the last game of the season taking Dunnikier to Gala the stakes are quite straight forward. The winner of this final match will be promoted.
