The World record set at Markinch earlier this month has been confirmed by the Scottish Highland Games Association.

Former World’s Strongest Man contestant and current global heavy events joint record holder, Gregor Edmunds, Glasgow, threw the 28lb weight for distance out to 95 feet, ten inches, which was around of a yard further than the previous record of 92:7 set in 1997, also at Markinch, by Francis Brebner from Peterhead.

On the day of the games, the distance measured by heavy events judge, Alex Webster, was verified by SHGA general council representatives.

But the weight has to be taken away by officials and calibrated to make sure it is not under the weight stated for the competition, although it can be over - which the weight used was.

This process was carried out by George Begg, the weights and measures inspector of Angus Council and witnessed by Mr Webster.

The weight has returned to Markinch and the record books have been updated.
