Tears, joy, shock and drama marked the selection of team members for St Andrews TTC’s Swots and Prospects for the forthcoming season.

To decide who would join which team, a play-off tournament was held in Victory Memorial Hall and the event was full of twists and turns.

The contenders, Collin Bleak, Dave Goddard and Emma Bisset from last year’s Swots, and Dave Beveridge and Robert Brown from Prospects, had been anticipating the night for weeks.

But it didn’t go the way most of the club expected.

Collin’s first match with Robert probably went to form with Collin winning narrowly in five games.

On the other table, Emma started with a surprisingly easy 3-0 defeat of Dave who had squandered a 10-5 lead in the second game.

As the evening unfolded, Emma continued to confound the form book by demolishing all before her with a display of superbly controlled table tennis - and she duly bagged the first vacancy in Swots.

After Dave Beveridge and Robert had picked up wins against Dave Goddard the drama really unfolded.

Collin usually gets the better of Dave but he struggled with his serve.

Collin reckoned his serve cost him 12 points in the first two games but, by the time he was returning it on the table, the match was lost 3-1.

The other two places in Swots were to be decided by the final two matches.

Collin took his wins to two with a fairly routine three game victory over Dave Goddard.

Robert was battling with Dave Beveridge on the adjacent table knowing that a win would give him a fighting chance of a top three finish.

Robert took the first two games comfortably and led 9-3 in the third game.

Dave fought back to win 18-16 and then the fourth 12-10 only to lose the match 10-12 in the fifth.

Robert, Collin and Dave B each finished with two wins, but on a count back of games won and lost in their encounters, the final in Swots went to Robert and Dave Beveridge.
