Rovers on top in East Neuk derby

PITTENWEEM Rovers and St Monans Swallows began the season with a cup tie derby, which Rovers won 5-2.

On a perfect day for football, and with 11 minutes on the clock, Pittenweem went ahead when Gary Wishart scored on his debut with a great diving header at the back post.

A Swallows free kick was cleared by the Rovers defence and they went two up in 15 minutes, as Marc Cameron scored with a powerful drive from a tight angle.

Alex Bowman made it 3-0 after 21 minutes, beating two players in midfield and firing the ball low into the corner from 23 yards.

St Monans came back strongly and they scored in 37 minutes, when a nice through ball was tucked home from 12 yards, and made it 3-2 in first-half stoppage time, when Rovers failed to clear a corner.

Swallows were very unlucky not to find the equaliser after a couple of fine moves, but advantage tilted further towards Rovers with a fourth goal in 71 minutes from Liam Tarvit, finishing from close range.

Pittenweem finally made the game safe with 10 minutes left through a Derek Ireland lob.

Match ball sponsor was the Larachmhor Tavern.
