KIRKCALDY Rugby coach Quintain Sanft could hang up his boots this season - if his young guns prove they can fill them.

The 35-year-old Samoan is prepared to stay off the pitch if it helps give one of the club’s home-grown players a chance.

Sanft told the Press: “I can still run but if I’m playing then a younger guy is not getting a chance.

“I’m looking to concentrate more on the coaching side because the last few years have been very hard trying to play and coach.

“We have a really young team, but the problem is some of them are not strong enough yet and need a few more years to develop.

“We’ll see if they can handle it during preseason games and work from there.”

League reconstruction will see Kirkcaldy play in the newly created Championship League East this season - a regionalised 10-team set-up beneath the National and Premier Leagues.

The Blues preseason campaign got off to an inauspicious start on Saturday as they fell to a 45-5 defeat to Championship League West side Dalziel.

This Saturday, West of Scotland, another Championship League West side, are the visitors to Beveridge Park, with the friendly kicking off at 1.30 p.m.

Further home friendlies against Dunfermline (Aug 11) and Greenock (Aug 18) will follow before the opening league match away to Hawick YM on August 25.
