BUCKHAVEN teenage rugby player Josh Laird “learned a lot” after representing Scotland at a tournament in England.

Josh (15), pictured right, recently returned from the week-long trip to Wellington College, where he played against both England and France under-16 sides with his fellow Scotland youth squad members.

Despite a third game having to be cancelled, the fourth-year pupil at Buckhaven High School was thrilled by the experience.

He told the Mail: “It was really good just being with other players from all over the world. There was England, France, USA, Canada, Belgium, Wales and lots of other teams.

“We played England in the first game and France in the second game but, when we went to play England B, it was cancelled, as the USA had scrumpox and some of the English players had caught it.

“I started in the first game, we were 10-0 up at one point but we had two players sent off and, during the time they were off, England scored 17 points. We couldn’t get back in the game and they won 32-27.

“In the French game, I came on as a sub after half an hour but we got beaten 32-5.

“I thought I played OK. It was a good learning experience, as it was a lot faster and more physical than club and regional rugby.”
