Howe cap season by scooping third award

FOLLOWING their success in winning RBS Premier 3, Howe of Fife Rugby Club have capped a fine season by scooping the 2011-12 RBS Club of the Month award for the third time.
The club was awarded the accolade for its strong links with the Bell Baxter High School; its large youth section which sees around 250 children from P4 to under-18 taking part in the sport every week; for their success in the league and in the early rounds of the Legacy Sevens series; and their wealth of coaches and referees.
Scottish Rugby’s regional development manager, Doc McKelvey, said: “Howe really run a club well.
“The majority of their coaches throughout the age groups and in the senior sides are also referee-trained so they never need to find a referee from elsewhere.”
CHAMPIONS
In April, the first XV had two matches to play against GHA.
Howe needed one win out of two to be league champions and GHA needed to win both ties.
However, Howe did enough winning the first tie on Saturday April 7 by 23-8, but lost the second tie 45-22, when the league was already won.
In addition, the club achieved a clean discipline record in April, receiving no red or yellow cards across all their teams.

“We’re delighted to be recognised for the effort we put in at every level from the top of the tree right to the bottom.
“Everyone in the club is celebrating.
“I think we have won the award three times because we have a recognised reputation for developing young talent and have a well-structured and substantial youth section that has been built up over the last 30 years.
“We also rely on home-grown talent and most boys in our first XV have been here since the minis.
“We have a minimum of two coaches at each age group and at least one is qualified in refereeing and the other in first aid.
“This makes us self-sufficient and has so many benefits.
“With the coaches being referee trained it gives them an insight into what referees have to deal with.”
Howe of Fife also run their own rugby camps in summer, Easter and autumn and they have a modern apprentice, Connor Dow, and club coach co-ordinator, Barbara Wardlow.
Their first XV coach, Garry Horne, invests in delivering pathway rugby and assuring key national themes are consistent throughout the youth teams.
As RBS Club of the Month, Howe of Fife will receive a cheque for £1000 and 10 invitations to the annual Scottish Rugby club awards dinner at Murrayfield on Friday, May 25.
On that evening, the club will be contenders for RBS Club of the Season.
