BUCKHAVEN teenager Josh Laird (15), has been selected to represent Scotland Under-16s at a tournament in England.

The fourth year pupil at Buckhaven High School was in Edinburgh over the weekend training with his new team mates at Murrayfield, and played against Newcastle Academy, before they fly south to Wellington College on Friday.

Whilst on the week long trip Josh, an outside centre, will play against both England and France.

After taking up rugby as a primary school pupil Josh has progressed through the ranks and now plays for both Kirkcaldy Rugby Club and school team Buckhaven Sharks.

To win his place in the Scotland squad he had to impress the SRU coaches in a number of games.

First he was picked to represent Fife, where his performance won him a place in the Caledonian squad which played against Glasgow.

The best players from that match, including Josh, were then picked to take on an Edinburgh/Borders select and Josh again did well enough to be one of 50 players to be picked for a Scotland trial.

That squad has since been whittled down to 26, of which Josh is one

Josh told the Mail: “I thought I could be good enough but it was all about how you performed in the games and how you coped under pressure.

“I want to get a pro contract with a team, but they don’t normally get given out until you are 20 so my aim is to keep trying to get better as a player.”
