St Andrews United open their doors to supporters young and old as they stage an open training session at Recreation Park on Saturday.

The event begins at 10am and will let the supporters see just what goes on behind the scenes during pre-season as well as meet new players such as Robbie Holden, Danny Dobie and striker Paddy Deane.

Manager Phil McGuire will then answer questions about the build up to the new season as well has his long term aims as United manager.

It is a change in direction for the St Andrews club who have in the past been accused of not connecting with the supporters something that the new manager wants to avoid.

McGuire said: “The club has a structure which through hard work and the community club we can look to achieve something here and safeguard the future of the club with having a funnel of young talent coming through the ranks and progressing to the first team.

“This is along with the other community benefits of the university and youth football.

“My aim is to develop these players into maximising and finding there level.

“If I can have a couple of players managing to go senior I will by all means be pushing that.

“This then grows our reputation as a club amongst local and widespread senior clubs as a breeding ground for local talent.”

A club spokesman told The Citizen that the open day will give everybody the chance to come down and have a look at what the team does during pre-season and meet the new faces before the games start.

He added: “We think it’s a brilliant idea and hopefully will lead to a few more coming along to watch the team once the serious stuff starts in August.”

The first batch of Premier League fixtures were announced during the week and United have been given a home start on Wednesday, August against Dundonald Bluebell.

This will then be followed by a trip to Perth on Saturday 9 to face Kinnoull at Tulloch Park.

August 16 sees a return to St Andrews to take on Dundee Violet before Phil McGuire’s team head north to face Montrose Roselea.

Saints complete August at home against Kingdom rivals Glenrothes.
