Sports awards honour Kirkcaldy's amazing achievers

KIRKCALDY's sporting heroes of the year past were honoured at a glittering awards ceremony last Thursday night.

Adam Smith College hosted the second annual Kirkcaldy Area Sports Council awards night, honouring the amazing achievements of local amateur sportsmen and women over 2009.

A number of titles were up for grabs but top prize, Sports Personality of the Year, was voted for by Fife Free Press readers and went to boxer Sean Finney.

The 19-year-old Kingdom Amateur Boxing Club champion held off stiff competition from last year's winner Eleanor Clarke, who continues to excel in blind bowling, and successful American football coach Neil Arnold, who were both runners-up.

Sean is one of Scotland's most highly regarded amateur boxers having won five Scottish and three British Titles from Boys through Youth, Junior and Senior stages.

He is holder of both a Scottish and East District Title having beaten the current British Champion and has represented Scotland in various international events.

Another star of the awards night was roller hockey coach Trish Dingwall, who left the event clutching four separate trophies, including

Service to Sport winner and the Marilyn Livingstone MSP award for special achievement.

What particularly impressed judges was Trish's dedication to her sport.

She said: "I love roller hockey with a passion. I spend two-thirds of my week on it, every spare moment, but I've not qualms about it. I do it because I love it."

Boxing coach Mike Keane made it a double for Kingdom ABC by scooping the Coach of the Year title, to add to Sean Finney's Sports Personality of the Year award.

"Kingdom Boxing Club is known all over the world, but unfortunately our future is uncertain as our premises are getting redeveloped for housing," he explained.

The oldest person to win an award was Thornton grandmother Gloria Carney who collected the Senior award for her achievements in ten-pin bowling, while the youngest individual winner was 15-year-old golfer Nicola Taylor, who was the first Kirkcaldy High School pupil to become Fife School's girls golf champion.
